What vs. How

Effective communication is at the heart of a healthy family life. Financial well-being, marriage, and the success of children are all related to your level of communication skills. The vast majority of teenage misbehavior and marital frustrations can be solved with effective communication skills.

Communication skills are not passed through your DNA like red hair. They are skills that are studied, learned, and mastered. This is a life-long process that doesn’t stop with learning a singular tool or concept. The process requires constant attention and practice.

Try Different not Harder

Trying harder is rarely the solution to increased production during competition. However, trying different usually works. It seems that we, as parents and spouses, sometimes become the epitome of insanity when we communicate with our loved one. The same argument over the same subject is just a repeat like the sequel to “Ground Hog Day.”

What vs. How

Our world specializes in telling us what to do, but with little emphasis on the how. Stephen Covey’s book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” masters the art of the what. Churches fill their pews with eager practitioners listening to the good word of ‘what’.

How many deaths, broken marriages, abused children, and problems would we avoid if more how preaching filled the chapels and synagogues of our great religions?
